Im sorry to have to ask this but i really get irritated. I cannot texture my ladder. Im in 3dsMax7, i make a box that i need to be the ladder. I Already made the texture for it, and assigned a texture to it. When i select- Editable Mesh- Element- and click on the ladder, when i scroll down to the texture part, the box with the name of the textures is gray and wont change. I go into material editor and click on the ladder texture and hit assign material to selection, and then that changes the gray box to a white one that says "No Name (#)"

WHAT THE FRIG IS UP WIT THIS?

I'm not sure... Did you try deleting the material and make a new one?

first off, do it in editable poly-polygon selection mode. You open Material Editor, click on a new material in your multi-sub materials (standard if the ladder isnt part of your bsp), give it a new name in the box that says 01-default, and apply whatever image to it (this image is for UVWing only and does not effect the texture that goes ingame). Then click on the polygons you want to apply it to, or all, and click the apply button on the material editor. Then make sure the material ID of the ladder material is then applied to the polygons (polygon properties/set ID to whatever material ID the ladder texture has.)

also make sure you have the "show map in viewport" turned on....

Usually what happened to you means messed up material ID matching...
