is it possible to create a system where there will be an alarm and HUD message when a homing missile is flying towards you in halo?
(like in an aircraft where it would be "missile warning, missile warning" etc)

Inconvenient , but possible , have the launcher fire a damage effect which hits the target instantly , while at the same time , the rocket flies towards you , while the damage effect triggers a warning recording.

This is a pretty good idea its just like how in halo 3 you get a beeping sound when the missle launcher locks on to you.

isnt it possible for you to shoot a secondary bullet and the first one at the same time. because if u can you can have a faster secondary projectile that does no damage but has the effects and no ipts so It would tell you right?

no he said make a extra damage effect. i said make a secondary projectile that locks on and is best accurate and doesnt push you or damage you maybe a .1 damage so it indicates where its comeing from but I think you gotta have a hud that tells you where it is comin from

Projectiles cause damage effects -__-

Saying that it should cause a new damage effect is a tantamount to saying using an extra projectile to cause that damage effect.

damage effects are used to cause damage, shake the screen, change the screen a certain color, or all of the above.

you want a .effect for the sound, not a .damage_effect

let me get this strait, so it fires a projectile and the projectile fires a sound into the persons HUD before it hits?

Fires a sound into the persons HUD? :S

One, you can't fire sounds, nor do things fire into the HUD :S

Not being an ass or anything but we can't clarify what you are asking if you don't understand how tags work...

Projectile detonations create effects, which in turn could create a sound. You can't affect a certain person's HUD, however. If you did it that way, then everyone would hear the sound. You should be able to modify the sound somewhere to change the range, but I'm not sure.

I think he means like a little box in the hud with a pic of a white missle inside(like just its shape) that glows red when a missle homes u and it creates a sound like...... missle homeing dected WEEEEEEEWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEWWOOOOO

well you could have 2 damages the first damage would have a voice to the hit target saying youve been locked or w/e you want. and then the missle would hit and boom. but you could do some fancy flying and not go boom.

basically this thread is about ways to implement such a system into Halo, so any possible way can be posted here and benefit other map-makers here who DO want to use such a system.
I hope this clarifies the meaning of this thread to those who are confused.
Anyway, those ideas posted so far are good, keep it up.

I would think that the projectile homing systems in the Halo 1 engine would not be able to replicate the homing effect in Halo 3 well enough that any of this would matter. You could not lock, and in a flying vehicle it would be nearly impossible to evade it.

you can allow a projectile to home in on a hostile, and you can break that homing similarly if you are being homed on (i did this before).
however, locking is something else that i am not refering to (which can be done too, but hard), and what i mean is that this MWR can detect if a missile has been fired in your direction, similar to what Gamma927 said.
