First map, I would call it good if it's:
-More than just a damn cliff with no hills.
-Populated correctly.

You can't say nothing assassinchief.
Learn a few things yourself.

What mooseguy means is you can't criticize people about their released maps until you have a good release.

If your going to do these box maps, I sugest you smooth out the sides. You can see the really squarey-rectangulary-boxxy parts of the map. Select the upper and lower vertex and move them inwards so it looks smoothed out at least. plus, I don't like the uber pointy hills, but if you like them, then keep them. EDIT: Oh yeah, UV the cliff part of the map, right now its like bleh.

The map loods okay, the first picture needs more scenery or something in it though.

Nothing is worse than this map:

Ordinarily, people make crappy maps and never release them. They do it for the experience. Once they have a modicum of knowledge about map making and that it is adequate to create a decent/playable/exciting/enjoyable map, then they release it. Right now you're on your way to making better maps. I would advise you not to release everything you make, but instead, compare it to some of the better ones we have around. That is how people become better, through exprience and criticism(Although some people here can't crit very well). Treat your first few maps as schooling. Once you're ready, you can tell that your map is worthy of a release.

so when modelling a BSP, can you just make a plane in Gmax and then move its vertices around or what?
or does it have to be a different format or what?

Dude, I also recommend that you don't release this map. I never released the first five practice maps that I ever made. This map, let's face it, is only a quick heightmap with some verts moved up for hills. Keep practicing, and you will make some actually cool stuff.

qwertyuiop i told you how the move the vertices so that you would know how to smooth your cliffs and also to use them to make hills, fair enough guys his map isn't great but it's his first map...maybe it shouldn't have been uploaded seeing it was his first practice map the thing is,he's a kid who wanted to upload his first map on his favorite game...i can't argue with that.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just get tired of content being released without comparison to the quality bar of other content. As i said, I kept making and not releasing maps until i had one that was ok to release.

Why are you fighting so hard to not have him release the things he spent time and effort on? Are you worried about it dragging down Halomap's quality or something? There's no reason he shouldn't release it - if someone enjoys the map, they'll download and play it, if they don't enjoy it then they'll skip over it. It's no big deal. A map doesn't need to look pretty to be fun.

A map has to attract an audience to make it fun and enjoyable to play. It is EXTREMELY hard and can only be done by experienced and professional game designs to make a game fun but not visually pleasing.

I hope this thread is a joke and you are still working on the map as at the moment all you have got is a heightmap and some scenery... All a heightmap does is use the white and black values on the bitmap to change the depth of the vert's in max.

By the looks of it you have just painted a quick squiggle and stuck it in max, no greys have been used to give the heightmap variation, just white and full black. If you insist in ruining your life and use heightmaps then at least put efffort into painting them by using a variation of grey's to make realistic cliffs and maybe even clean it up in max.

All modifier's in max should be applied to the mesh and then cleaned up, they are there to help you not do ALL of the work. Computer's don't make good decisions on where to place edges ect when such tools are use.

I suggest you delete what you have, start over and put some effort into it...

same here my map looked similar to it,after all the first tutorial i downloaded and learned from was the yap yap.i knew by the tutorial that i could make hills by moving the vertices but because the tut didn't mention anything about the cliff one's i didn't think about it,i was proud of my first map... then i started looking at some of the maps other people were making and also looked closer at the standard maps in halo.iv'e been working on a map now for at least 3 months.it's taking a long time but there's just so much you can do.

take your time with it and yeah i will be happy to see screenshots and even to recive it once it's finished

And people here wonder why some people don't release stuff. Well, it's because when they first start making maps, they get flamed like hell by retards because they DO release them! From now on, when I get real good, I'll only give stuff to the few people here who aren't retarded.

Damn don't cry, it's okay. I'm not being an ass to you, im just giving you completely legitimate criticism - you should be thanking me for taking the time to give it to you kid.

If you don't like crit then your not going to enjoy your stay here, everyone should WANT crit so grow a set and man up and accept it then maybe you might improve.

And dont worry, your not special, if anyone released there first map (which is stupid) they will get this crap as well.
