Simple question - what they do and what they mean?

I've been using them but I still don't know what for they're and how they work.

Initial state: when the AI spawns, this is their state until a stimulus causes a change.

Return state: after a stimulus causes a state change (such as a visible enemy), this is the state they will return to when the stimulus has worn off.
