Almost certain that if the gamespy servers do close down, there'll be a new community host up within a month at the longest. I'm pretty sure someone around here actually worked out how the Gamespy servers work and already tested a replacement. Can't recall who it was though.

That someone would be me, although I'm not speaking about that on here yet.

I am not a coder, but replacing the GameSpy server sounds relatively easy.

It probably wouldn't show in the current servers list BUT, since Hosting and Direct IP would still work, a 3P application or even a website that monitors active Servers would work. I mean, xFire does it already. Doesn't Halomaps also have a "Top Servers" Page? This is simple, the app would gather the host's "IP" and then send it to the new server. There would be a "Join" button or something, to join up. Other games have that, it's possible. Let's not abandon yet.

My replacement works by redirecting the request to gamespy to my own server which handles the requests.

I would never forget Halo CE multiplayer after all the servers were shutdown.

Ah yeah, pretty sure that's the name I was trying to remember. Yeah, E3p0 was doing a server replacement app and I seem to recall he was discussing improving the stability over Gamespy's servers.

I wouldn't trust E3p0's apps. He has quite a track record. Think tool**.

I think we all knew this day would come. But it hasn't yet.

I hope it won't come anytime soon, either...

The biggest problem is, as I found from talking to several people in RP and default map servers, a good number of Halo PC and CE users, especially foreign users (don't underestimate how many of them there are!), don't even know about this website or that we, this community, even exist.
Of course, it wasn't a formal test, so I might be freaking out here... but still.
If we can't get people to know there's a place to get and make mods for Halo, then how do we migrate an entire community?

Even if multiplayer disappears, there is single player, and potential of emulating a multiplayer experience through AI bots. So saying that Halo: CE will die without multiplayer isn't necessarily true, but it would still be a huge blow to the community.

I think that "huge" blow would be closer to being "lethal", but that's true.
But what are the chances that people will take that step? Going along with what I said above, it's possible that many people with this game (especially foreigners) don't even know you can download maps... and they never would have, if Firefight Descent and Lumoria never came along.
If that's the case, then what are the chances that anyone would do that? Besides, why does nobody download Blood Gulch AI mods?
If AIs can't gain enough widespread intelligence in two weeks, and we can't get more players to realize that halomaps.com exists, then I doubt this will help keep this game alive.

Noone says we can't create our own application, if direct IP still works then it means we can use alternate servers. The interface possibly wouldn't look the same ... but we have all the UI files and so I'm sure there is a work around. We just have to work our ass into doing it.

Whether GameSpy will screw us over or not, I think it's about time we started to overhaul the current Halo CE system; in otherwords, I think we need to find a new alternative that won't let Halo multiplayer (and thus, Halo CE/PC in general) die out because of GameSpy/Glu.
To me, this seems like the best idea... But is this even possible?

EDIT: Oh. It's E3pO... In that case, it's still better than nothing, right? Any chance we could reverse-engineer his work or something?

I might try it. If it doesn't work, how easy would it be to make it go back to using GameSpy?

Easy as moving a d3d9.dll out of the CE folder.

Only once we can make the open-source Halo CE "version" 2.0.

The game is nearly decade-old anyway, so it has been a good run. Maybe they'll shut down the servers on September 30, 2013? That would be cool!

eh, you know they are going to have a vice grip on that title until in starts costing them money to keep it

and even then, they just might destroy everything, so that no one can have it.

Well, one thing this Does mean, if we don't use GameSpy anymore then we don't need CD Key authentication anymore.

While this means "Influx of mexicans" It also opens up the opportunity to increase the player base

And for those of us who've only been around for a short time, we could see it coming, but it's still just totally painful..

Oh. By the way, I looked around Twitter and Facebook to confirm this, and Glu/Powered by Gamespy hasn't said a word (yet).
However, GameSpy (the server managers Powered by GameSpy and game reviewers are DIFFERENT companies!) did respond to many people's worries on Twitter:

Far as we know, it was Microsoft that pulled the plug on those servers. Probably not coming back. Our advice: http://www.gameranger.com/

I also found other news articles that announced this only hours ago:

But wouldn't it be... OH! OH OH OH! Gamespy, turn it all off. We'll host our own.

That way, we can advertise HALOMAPS!

Do you have any idea what sapp is?

sapp is a modded halo ce dedi thats is used by most servers. Its used so much because of all the commands u can use. From sapp 3.02 i think u could make your own zombies server. From i think 4.5 it had the no-lead mod.
