If your account is to new to upload pics then upload it to an image site so we can see some pics and stuff.

Rule 101 of the internet always provide proof with pics before submitting odd mediafire links.

It's real/fake

It has files in it, but It is also requesting access to the windows registry (something macs don't have :P)

My sources say this is a leak and should not be downloaded.

Kthxbi.

"leak"?

I very much doubt this is a leak from 343. An extraction, maybe, but seeing as how adjutant and such is allowed, why would this not be?

This is a Valid .MAX file. I looked at the file in a HEX editor and it has a uninterrupted Stream of a normal MAX file. I was not able to run as an executable on Windows 7 32 bit.
I can't provide a picture because I don't have 3ds max installed on my virus screen.

This is a IMG tag of the image he provided, I have no way of knowing if this is legitimate.

Go ahead and explain the icon of the file. Yeah, totally legit. Duh.

Files don't retain icons unless they're executable (exe, scr, odb) The icon you see would have to be the same icon assigned to all max files on your computer. A Mac wouldn't be able to get icons from a windows file in any instance.

If you want to prove that this is real, upload it to Halomaps instead of a generic file hosting site. It'll appear in the next update if it's legit.

Explain why my computer thinks its a Word file when it's supposedly a Max file? Word files can contain executable code, likely launching a legitimate Max file to hide what it's really doing. SilentJacket says it's trying to access the registry in the background. The most educated guess would be it's grabbing CD keys.

  • SilentJacket is on a Mac. A binded Windows executable couldn't run on a mac in a million years, and that's the only way it could be the cause of that dialog.

  • You have some program that associates the .max extension as a world file. Windows only associates file type definitions with the file extension. (change to exe it thinks its a valid exe) I checked in a hex editor for a modified hash and it is a valid max file.

Confirmed Legitimate.
The Max file has separated body parts listed by name and a skeleton that is similar to the halo reach elite. It is not rigged and has no textures. The geometry is named as if this model was ported. Halo 4 is a terrible game. .max is a word document type too.

Just because you think you know everything

doesn't make it a virus.

apparently ".max" is a word processing save format (like rtf, txt, doc). your mac thought it knew better and "converted it for you" to doc, like when you download a zip and it unzips it for you.

Let me just reiterate this:

1. You ran the .doc while stupidly thinking it's a .max.

2. The .doc then launches the 3ds file to distract you and make you think "oh wow this must be real". The 3ds file is very real. So is the code that's running alongside this action.

3. The .doc has already ran the malicious code in the background and the damage has been done. Enjoy.

That's the Halo CE Elite rig, BTW.

Just a tip for the naive: even the best virus scanners won't be able to detect a new, custom virus. They only check for ones that have been known to exist already.

You're a ██████g idiot.

  • Viruses don't do that. In any instance, they don't do that. The virus would have to know the max version you were using and that is all under the chance you installed it in the default location with 32 bit architecture.

  • It's not a doc file. Look at the HEX, It follows the structure of a MAX file perfectly. It wasn't a binded MAX file because the MD5 would have given that away to the virustotal scan.

Yes, When you highlight a .max file in windows, there will be a preview thumbnail.

You wonder why antivirus programs don't warn you by saying that d3d8 and d3d9 injections are Trojans. The -only- reason antivirus software doesn't complain about those is because people know full well what they do. Antivirus software is NOT always right, it's up to judgement

It's not up to judgement. It's easy to see a file that has an executable inside with a hex editor or if it's a regular max file.

another note: doc's can't be malicious.

Download it or don't. I can't confirm that it is a valid MAX file since I don't have the 3DS program but none of our virus scanners have found any malware in the file. This is not say it is 100% safe but I have no reason to delete the link. I would tend to err on the side of caution especially since the person who made the account has only posted this link one reply and nothing more, and is distributing the file without attribution.

As for your PC trying to open it as a Word file: If so then the problem is with the file associations on your specific PC. The .MAX extension is not a default or special association with Word so your PC has sometime in the past re-associated it with Word and not GMAX or 3DS.

I downloaded the file, and the default opening app was word. I assume that the 3d file was originally opened in an earlier version of max.

Scanned the file, no virus.

I opened the file with 3ds Max 2012. A 3d model of the Halo 4 elite is displayed.

Seems pretty darn legit to me.
