Hello. I bring you progress on my new map project, The Pit.

It should be noted that I am in no way associated with Penguin, or his own version of this project. I will be using extracted Halo 3 textures on a custom BSP model (which I stole off of halomaps and can be found here: http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=5300 )

I have heavily overhauled the model so far, and I am far from finished. Currently, I am the only one working on this project as of yet, but I will be using my old tagset from Foundry on this, so it shouldn't be too difficult.

Firstly, I will show some pictures that demonstrate the differences I have made to the model, and some pretty renders of my current progress.

Raw import with tiled rust texture as a placeholder:

Here it is with the H3 concrete texture applied (no model modifications yet)

Addition of the proper platform on the building exit, added windows and modified the others:

Some unwrap, mostly for the sake of having textures applied:

Modeling of the cross-braces:

Before addition of modular pieces: ( had already inset\extruded the geometry)

After addition of modular pieces:

I am working on multiple projects for\with different people, but this one is my own.

Are you actually gonna have a finished weapon tagset this time?

No. It's going to be super inconsistent. The sniper will shoot nukes at 5 bullets a second.

I leave with this last render of the day:

Would anyone know how to model the giant hangar ceiling structure?
This one:

I could finish the entire map myself, but obviously it would take a little longer, so if anyone thinks they can make worthwhile contributions, go ahead and say so.

Make a Horizontal box with alot of segements in it, then use either soft selection or bend to make it into the shape you want. Then copy it however many times you need too. After that you can connect each one.

since i come from a Cad background i would make a circle then scale the circle until the arc about matches that roof then i would delete the rest of the circle and copy my new arc as many times as needed back.

Sure, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

progress render:

I applied the correct material IDs to most things, I still need to model in some parts.

I seem to remember them having a collision. Though that might be Pitfall I'm thinking of...

Wait, what did you use to extract that bsp? Because whenever I use the bsp extractor from this site, it either exports as a blob of random faces or tilted 90 degrees on its side and riddled with errors.

I used the BSP exporter on this site. Make sure the OBJ model is set to not be flipped. I wasn't able to get the materials, but I didn't need them because I'm making my own better ones. I also had to flip a bunch of faces.

@Jesse you sure the Hangar out there isn't apart of the sky itself? I would like to say it is. Halo 3 abused skies for adding in low res details for map "filler"

I can tell that it's mostly solid BSP. I think the mountains and desert outside are probably sky, but I can't be sure.

@Qwerty

What kind of assistance?

Really? I set the file to not be flipped and it still gave me this

Importing obj models in newer versions of 3ds max often result in this.

im looking at the braces from the picture, and it seems that there's a slight spacing behind the blue area that you didnt include. that could be because you didnt apply the opacity in 3DS or that its not actually spaced like in the shot. Which is it?

Can't you still take screenshots off bnet? or did that dropped in the transition to 343

If you have halo 3 for the 360 and a flash drive, you can grab the con files and convert them to native jpg format... Its a small header change; if you want there are programs that can do it for ya. I'll even upload the one I have if its needed...

That would be amazing! Upload the program or give instructions of how to access the files\edit them for use.

To answer the question of the blue panels, they are currently just floating right now, I still need to model the bracing attachments that 'hold' them there. There's a ton of detail still missing, but if you guys would like, you can edit the pic of the render and circle what you think is wrong. The spacing IS there, but the panels are floating for the moment.

No, Bungie.net doesn't work for Halo 3 anymore, I haven't checked lately if 343 supports Halo 3 now, but I'll check soon. I have to take pictures of my computer monitor with my iPhone.

you should be careful about not putting too much detail and keep some as scenery.

Also you should try to find someone who would do another part of the map with details and references so the project can move faster

looks amazing. Can't wait to play it like H3 Foundry. But why not use Halo 3/Reach Announcer Dialogue? In CTF, if someone steals flag 'either red or blue' the announcer should say 'Flag taken'. If someone scores, he should say 'flag captured'. If a gametype is team slayer or any team game, the announcer should say just "Slayer", "King of the Hill". "If the hill moves, instead of playing a sound, the announcer should say "Hill Moved". If in oddball, he should say "Ball reset". If the player returns the flag or the flag resets itself, he should say "Flag reset".

It sure would be nice to finish the model first.
There are multiple large structures that still need work, and I try to focus on one at a time, adding in all the detail I can and feel is appropriate.

With foundry, there were quite a few items that should have been BSP, but instead were placed as scenery (vents, electrical boxes, pipes).

If I had the skills I have now back then, foundry would look a little better than it does now. Fortunately, I now have the capability of making sure Items are BSP when they need to be.

I think the fences could be scenery...

Just an FYI, that terrible model you're working with is actually mine. I made it a couple of years back and it somehow got used and semi completed I guess.
