If only there were some current gen PC games that had to run 2 frame buffers for the next gen graphics as well as last gen both at 1080p 60FPS.. but there are none.

Old news. I would argue that they're running 2 graphics engines at the same time, but I'm not dumb enough to take your bait.

Movie aspect ratio.

Glad I bought an ultra-wide TV instead of some pathetic oversized low-ppi 1920 :)

What kind of funky resolution is that 343. Yes I still play on my 4:3 TV.

0/10 at least it still runs in 60fps.

Other Halos still run at 1080p. I think Halo 4 looked like utter crap at 720p. That 1080p should help the heck out of it and of course the other games will look better but I think Halo 4 suffered the most.

Quote: But 4:3 is 1440x1080... and 5:4 is 1350x1080.
Apparently it's 166:135.

I wanna keep playing custom content and not be forced to a game without that because all of the population went there, so I just want to keep it on the console.

Tbh the resolution is actually not that bad.

But I do agree, its kind of pathetic that the 'next gen' consoles can't even run at the almost standard resolution of 1920 * 1080 while we are gradually moving off to 4k.

Disclaimer: Resolution should not discourage you from buying a game. Super Mario Bros is the 4th best-selling game of all time at a gorgeous 256x240. I just find this matter interesting to discuss.

From a visual fidelity standpoint, I don't understand why they're keeping the vertical pixel count full but reducing it horizontally, instead of just scaling down a little in both dimensions. 1328x1080 is only smaller than 1600x900 by 5760 pixels, so they could have the game render at either resolution with virtually identical performance. I'll bet that stretching the image sideways will make things look a bit weird due to the substantial blurring (1328 is about 69% of 1920) that will occur only from side to side. I would prefer that they set the resolution to 1600x900, so the game render and the output screen would have the same aspect ratio, and therefore the slight blurring would be very even throughout and the resultant image would be pretty hard to distinguish from full 1080p without looking at a freeze frame comparison.

I do think I know the real reason why they went with that weird, pseudo-1080 resolution: it's because 900p on Xbox One has been pretty badly stigmatized, and going with any resolution that ends in 1080 will let them call the game 1080p without technically lying, since that number alone doesn't say anything about the picture's other dimension.

Pure 1080p is such a moot point anyway. H1 Ani looks fantastic at 720p, going even higher is fine by me. There is a point where you can't determine the size of the pixels anymore when above 720p.

And before people go on about 4K displays, on TV they are often for seats above 60", and for computers the biggest effect is on how text renders if you are not doing some sort of high resolution work with bitmaps.

My question is why didn't they use a more standard resolution. Couldn't they have just done 900p. I'm not the kind of person who needs all the extra pixels, but it is bothersome that these "new" consoles that are supposed to last a decade can barely run a game at 1080p 60fps, which is already a standard set for games today. If it is already cutting corners to play a game that is supposed to show off the power of the new console, I don't feel as comfortable considering the console is only about a year into it's life cycle. If these consoles are supposed to have any sort of longevity, they have done nothing thus far to make me believe so.

I share the same concern, although graphics aren't everything I do expect my next-gen machine to be able to run heavy-duty games in their full glory.

Well for PC gamers.. do you really want to be playing a monthly fee, not be able to select your maps from a server list, have no modding support, and be required to have an Xbox to unlock everything?

Because that's exactly what a straight port of MCC for PC would include.

My Macbook runs at a simulated 4K resolution, 3840x2400.
Technical reason why it's simulated: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6023/the-nextgen-macbook-pro-with-retina-display-review/6

All they are doing with the resolution here is sticking with the 4:3 aspect ratio that the original game had, for the graphical engine switch.

Resolution is a pretty big deal on something like this where it's literally just a graphical upgrade. Halo 4 suffered horribly from running on the 360. Anything not 3 feet infront of you looked like turd. Plus Halo 4 resolution (plus just low graphics) bugged me so much as I constantly spotted spots where it showed badly. Look at the grass here, 85% of the grass in Halo 4 constantly looks like this and it bugged me to no point.

That looks pretty good to me, there are multiple aspects where H4 suffered terribly on 360 compared to XB1. The grass doesn't appear to be as much of a resolution problem with the games rendering, as it does with it's implementation.

H4 also had a disgusting ass texture compression to it. i hope thats something dealt with in MCC. i honestly cant tell right now.

Resolution is part of a reason why the grass is suffering. Turn up that res and everything gets sharper. Sure there are other aspects to it but res is definitely part of it

it's part of it, but not of the picture you posted. Alexis could probably give a better explanation of all the stuff that goes on more than me. Just upping the res wouldn't fix that grass.

That grass is simply fading away due to the LOD system that they've been using ever since Halo 3. Upping the resolution wont do anything for it.

With that said though, its a bit depressing that a "next gen" console wont be able to run @ 1080p. I've also been hearing that Halo 2 Anniversary does not run that good in campaign and suffers from lag.

It can run it at 1080p, just not 2 games at 1080p at the same time.

Also the review units were 6 months old apparently, it's silky smooth now according to IGN.

So 1080p 60fps as announced and they're already turning back on it. So much for next gen.
