Out of curisoity, which spartan design do you prefer? Halo Reach, or Halo 4?

Here's an image comparison:

Reach, without question. Halo 3 did it pretty well, too.

That is like asking what's your favorite meat product, a tomato or an apple.

I honestly love halo 4 spartans, they seem more futuristic and not dull. It is the year 2552 after all.

Like I said though earlier you can't compare the 2. Reach and Halo 4 have different feelings. Reach is a dark sad story, while halo 4 is not. Each halo game has had an amazing aesthetic design (except Halo 2) for it's feeling of the game.

Once again though I just prefer halo 4 spartans because they feel what soldiers in 2552 would wear, plus they are shiny and dipped in baby oil.

He's asking which one you prefer, not which one is objectively superior to the other.

I know but if he plans to use one over the other, he needs to make sure its not opinion on looks, but if its fits with his designs.

I don't like either, but if I had to choose, I'd go with Reach's Spartans over H4.

I still think Reach had a superior artistic taste.

imo halo 3 and reach had the best artstyles in the series (i bundle odst into halo 3 cause tbh it is really an expansion)

halo 4+ art is overdesigned and overdetailed. as the future goes on things can become simpler. they dont need thousands of attachments on their armors for functions that were already there on previous versions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0oPHs5ucS0

also this video made me nearly vomit. 343 butchered the hogs design. it took a 20+ years backwards step in technology.

I'll say Reach though.

Why? It's more of a feeling of year 2552 to me at least. Halo 4 spartan design, honestly, is more of a year 2600-700ish once they discover forerunner techs and start adapting to elements been used and power source of course. That's all I got to say.

Reach for me is a lot more believable in comparison to H4 which feels like every design was taken from a manga sketch.

Are you sure you played the right games? Correct me if I'm wrong but Halo 4's story had a very prevalent dark undertone to it.

In all honesty, Reach just played its story in a stupid way. 4 pretty much cleaned up on reach's storytelling but didn't do much to help itself

To even say that is silly.. H4 has characters who go through emotional arcs and the story has a clear beginning and end where the events of the missions have an effect on the characters and story in the nextvmission.. Reach has almost none of that.

Reach because I preferred Bungie's low-key UNSC style to 343's futuristic but rather generic take on it.

Reach

One of the only reasons I kept playing Halo Reach was for the armor. It makes sense how Halo 4's armor looks more futuristic but it looks horrible and over-complicated so Reach.

Everything in Halo 4, models, sounds, textures, are all made out of plastic. So Reach.

Almost agree with this. I'll take it one step further and say Halo 3 wins it for me, as back then, the Spartan armor still was low-key as well. Reach did something really stupid imo, with all the tacky customised gadgets and bright colors. I understand they did this for better character distinguishisation, if that is a word, but I found it ended up looking quite dumb.

Dunno if you ever actually opened any of reach's textures, but those of us who have know that reach's entire pallete was significantly darker than Halo 3. Not only that, reach used a lot of diffuse-detail mapping in conjunction with its detail normal which gave it a lot of extra dirt/grime overall. Putting that aside, a lot of reach's gadgets as say actually look like they're part of the models they go with. Sure some look weird (like the EOD rebreather removal, why would you do that) when used with some armors, but that's more of a personal aesthetic choice than anything.

Allow me to give an example. Here's a character I made by meshing together the reach Spartan with some parts from Halo 3

When used properly, the customization looks less tacky and more purposeful. Given that's also part of knowing how to balance everything out, as opposed to say this.

This was actually supposed to be SlowBullet's character model for CE3 2015, except the idea was dropped when the polycount was too high and I was unable to rig the lowpoly. Either way that's where you learn moderation in design.

Then I can see you complaining about not using strictly reach pieces, to which I have something for you still.

Again, a lot of person aesthetic choices go into how you use the attachments and colors, notably on that last one. I used my own custom color set for that Spartan as opposed to the reach defaults because quite frankly, the colors were to dark and desaturated.

Hope that was somewhat insightful.

TLDR: Reach Colors weren't bright in the slightest, moderation in design makes stuff look less tacky, reach hit this with some armor and missed it with others. I show examples

I understand your point, and agree with you on using gadgets with moderation.
Allow me to clarify what I meant with bright colors, as I was too brief. I simply meant the overall choice of armor colors, eg below you see a spartan team, it is composed of (somewhat) bright color schemes, we see a blue, red and yellow spartan:

Whereas what would make more sense, in a real military squad, is to be alot more uniform, such as:

What I am basically saying, is that it's hard for me to take Halo Reach's spartan squad too serious, as they overdid the differentiation between characters imo. The result is a squad that could have been colored by a child, using crayons to color his coloring book.

Yes indeed, quite like this (I had to edit out the profanity in that pic lool):

PS: I quite like the first Spartan you meshed together.

I agree with Lodeman.

Honestly don't understand the color schemes either, camo would indeed be uniform for wherever they were in combat, probably mostly with darker colors, and you'd imagine that Spartans would all mostly have the same armor rather than all theses tons of different variants anyway (consider how little the amount of Spartans are, and how expensive it is to make the armor too).

All of the Spartans in Reach wear the same base armor, and everything else is basically an accessory (i.e. the ODST chestplate snaps on over the base chestplate). A number of the variants were either older models or not exclusive to the Spartan Program, which would indicate that the price isn't quite as high as you might think since they can clearly afford to equip regular infantry with GUNGNIR, Military Police, ODST, UA/NxRA, and Tactical/LRP accessories.
