Before you ask, i got my copy back in '06, but i lost the disk so i got a pirated copy.
I am thinking the game is abandonware.

Is anyone ever going to find out? I mean really?

I use 2 pc's and use keygenerated keys for both installs. I've never bothered using my CD simply because I don't want to open the box.

As long as you own the original copy you can duplicate it for your own needs BUT selling of the game using illegal copies OR distributing free versions without permission from the producer without consent is PROHIBITED.

This a site for classic abadonware, i am thinking the game is abadonware because Bungie doesn't own Halo anymore and 343 doesn't give a crap about a 12 year old game.
Gearbox NEVER owned Halo, they were licensed to PUBLISH it so they don't own it.

So i guess they don't think CE is abandonware, but they did use the original PC engine for anniversary.... like anyone cares about that game anyway.... (I bet it is the game 343 regrets the most)

Considering Microsoft released an update for this game last year, I don't think you can really classify this as abandon-ware.

That means it might just be freeware, i mean, microsoft made it so that your couldn't connect to gamespy servers. Eather way, microsoft nor 343 or Gearbox gets money for it.
That classifys as abandonware in my book.

That was actually just a couple of Bungie employees. They said the build PC was still in their possession and, seeing as at the time, GameSpy was shutting down, they went ahead and made an update. AFAIK the ensuing response was largely "Thanks Bungie :)" and thus we have 1.010.

Not it is not abandonware. It is an unsupported "upgrade" release which is different. Microsoft is still in business and still holds the copyright.

Abandonware doesn't have to mean that the company is no longer in business or that the copyright is in limbo.

Microsoft didn't actually do anything for that.

Gamespy went down, and so did their servers. In short, there were no Gamespy servers to actually connect to.

Correct but it is the primary indicators. However Halo CE is NOT abandonware.

Microsoft terminates its support after a certain period of time. Halo 1 has reached "end of life" in their eyes.

Technically Your right, but remember that happen when Gamespy´s servers where shut down, but then there was an "oficial" (almost) update from the hands of former Bungie employees.

Theres the case of Half-life and Doom wich are far more old and there not abandoneware.

Halo CE must life until my projects are finish

I am necro-bumping this thread.

It is 2020 now. Is CE considered abandonware yet?

No.

I suppose the copyright will expire at some point and it could be considered abandonware. That would still be a very long time from now. I think copyright lasts about 95 years from publication in the US, and since Halo Custom Edition was published in 2004 you would be waiting until the year 2099.

Only the youngest members of the forum may live to see this. I would be over 100 years old by this time and have little chance of seeing this happen, but if I happen to make it I'll post back here and let you know. I doubt I would be able to install Halo on my quantum computer by that point however.

I'm no copyright expert though, I'm not even sure what would happen with the game if the copyright did expire. This post was just meant to be a fun thought experiment.

Since this was already "necro-bumped"

Yes. imo it might as well be abandoned officially right? There are one or two people, one of who is from Bungie from what I can gather from here and other sources, that made the last 1.10 update.

Let's look at this practically:

So we have a master server, that used to be the Gamespy server, hosting the current server list as of this post.

If that host shut down tomorrow, the only way to click "get list" or "refresh" in game and getting a list of servers would be in LAN only....... There would be no more Internet>Join game>Get List/Refresh

That host is running whatever program(s) Gamespy used to run as the Halo master server. We would need this Halo Master Server to ensure HCE/PC can function past the current host, who must be running it right now.

It would also require a client update to 1.11 to change the master server IP if the current master has to change.

I"m literally willing to pay to host the master server myself (and some in-game servers if needed). It's just a server query list, much like a DNS server. But requires very little resources whatsoever. But would require a client update as mentioned.

Either way, the code for the master server hasn't been made public. I'd bet it's similar to haloceded.exe or haloded.exe whatever.

No it is not "officially" abandoned nor has the copyright expired. Your opinion does not align with the facts.

Also, Dennis: What legal right do you have to distribute Halo Custom Edition,
The one granted me by the user agreement, and the EULA.

Stop trying to be a primadonna. If you were as smart as you claim you think you are you would have never had to ask such an incredibly stupid and inane question.

I don't get it. If my question were so easy to answer, why didn't you just answer it with a direct quote from the EULA?

nobody wants to search through a legal document to have a nuanced argument with a retard
