Hey everybody, I'm starting to take the idea to make maps fairly serious.

But before I really start learning, what free modeling software is the best one to use?

Also, I've got Sapien, Guerilla and Blitzkrieg ready, are there any other necessary tools I need to have before I can create maps?

3DS Max. Different versions of it require different exporters, for example 8 uses Blitzkrieg, 10 uses Bluestreak and newer ones use junglegym.

I think this is a matter of preference, but which one do you recommend?

They are mostly the same so you could just use the newest one.

Well it's probably best to get the latest version if you feel you'll be hot swapping files with the dudes around here.

That's 2017 btw, personally though the guys I work with use a multitude of different versions and remember each version only supports files for two to three prior releases.

Which is why I have Max 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2017 installed.

Is it good enough to use just 3ds max 8? And if so, please link me? :)

No it isn't because it's got outdated tools, it's probably buggy too and despite what holanimator thinks it doesn't automatically make you an OG pro.

Yes it is good enough. No we can't link it here, just find it yourself.

That moment that you have to decide which troller is the most trustworthy...

What about Gmax though? Nobody mentioned it

I use the 2012 version, works perfectly for animations-models. i never had a "i cant find a plugin for my version :(" scenario so im pretty happy with it.

Yeah that's because GMAX is for four year olds who want to learn how to use a viewport. There is NO STL check or xview support which are both vital btw for debugging map errors before venturing into .wrl's.

I'd recommend you get the latest version of 3dsmax which is 2017. Also do you know the basics on how to create a map and to compile it and to make materials for it? If you don't I can give you a hand.

I'll tell you, I only had followed some basic tutorials as far, atm I'm still puzzling why I didn't extract any actors from the campaign and how the hell I can create my own scenario's xD

let alone compile it to a .map file

Max 2010 will forever hold a special place in my heart.
That said, just use the latest version from Autodesk with a student license.

I like to type up my models in notepad and save it as .obj.
Then I just run it through some Obj2Jms exporter, easy!

As already stated, it is ALWAYS a good idea to keep a few versions of Max handy. You can easily setup a github or label each file with a version extension to keep things organized.

Aside from the torrent/illegal links to obtain pre 2010 versions, you can signup for FREE student software from Autodesk, and get everything you need. If your going to school, look for the links on Autodesk.

As for exporters, both Blitz and Blue are buggy so go with Junglegym.

That is true for BSPs but Junglegum doesn't work well with regions as I heard.

Congratulations, if it's your passion then run with it, hardly any of us possess the ability to undertake multiple roles in the gaming scene with the exception of mosesofegypt so don't feel too bad if you are struggling with picking up a new skill.
