It's been brought to my attention that trying to move on and do something else is frowned upon. But I had these lying around so I guess I'll just finish it.

Halo 2 OS Tagset Redux


So ever since CE3 2014 I guess I've sort of hinted at me doing some kind of Halo 2 OS tagset (Every now and again I'd post some Halo 2 stuff, and then it would never be seen again). I've definitely done pieces of stuff for it but I never fully started it until the summer of 2016 (That's a long time for some shader edits, I know.)

This tagset is built using Jesse's and Kirby's work as a base, with a few extra additions from me too. I'm aware Halo 2 isn't really that great of a game, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a soft spot for how it looked.

Every shader has been modified or made from scratch by me.

I'll be posting more pics soon, but can't promise consistent updates due to me working on other projects in other games. sorry that I'm using Bloodgulch as a test map at the moment. Hopefully you guys will enjoy these on your own soon enough.

Mhm, I'm really digging the shaders. Looks like some detailmaps are needed though. Don't forget to use Halo 2 Vista textures, some are higher res than their xbox counterparts.

To a lesser extent, I don't hate the game but I don't think it's aged as well as people say it has.

It's just his opinion, guys. He's not a Halo 2 fan, you are, so what's the issue? This "Heresy!! You don't like the chapter X!" thing is quite annoying if you ask me

I can't tell, but are you using any uncompressed source bitmaps extracted with TeXource? You can get them for almost all of the weapons, vehicles, and the player bipeds.

Your diffuse maps wont have compression artifacts if you use them as 32bit color, or you can at least minimize them by saving them as dds with photoshop and turning them directly into tags with mozz.

The critics and most fans of Halo would disagree. Anyways I don't think it was necessary for Sean to put into his initial post that he dislikes Halo 2. Could of gone about it a bit differently imho. But yeah I look forward to seeing the new tagset when it's ready.

Why did you use some random SMG animations instead of the actual Halo 2 ones for the tagset though?

I guess its worth mentioning I have a lot of the HDoan anims too, and I guess I'll also include those.

no dual wielding, and it's the same balancing as zteam so it should work fine.

Now there's a name I haven't heard in a long time. Which set of animations though? HDoan did like 3 iterations among H3T's tagset, and while each was marginally better...I remember I got into such a fit of rage thinking I could do better that I ended up beginning to animate in secret with my mentor ICEE and my mother Donut.

To be honest, my favorite ODST design from the series was actually the Halo 2 iteration. Not sure why, perhaps it's the more subtle and simplified overall look of them.

Anyway, why the visor color change from it's original white to blue? Was that done in wake of the Halo 2 Anniversary design?

The shaders are still being worked on, tbh the visor shader is hardly changed from how it was in H2SPP, and I'm still adjusting things. I'll probably keep it the same, because tbh I sort of dig how it looks. No other Halo games except vanilla Halo 2 and the limitations of Halo 1 are influencing this project.

Is there anyone here who might wanna check out the animations? The third person animations are plagued with some problems, the Marines overlays are borderline non existent, they don't have shooting anims or even some reload anims, Elites can't get out of dropships, etc.

I don't really trust those h2 animations that have been floating around, because all I know about them is that they've been in the possession of some of the killer5000-type posters around here, and that they have a reputation for being really rough around the edges, or outright broken. Unless, of course, you got them from the source, which is Mootjuh or Kirby themselves.

But, if you could get them cleaned up and in seamless working order for CE, I'd be very interested in using them. I'll download the set and have a look at them, I suppose.

EDIT: also, how do you deal with the bump maps in h2? aren't they, like, monochrome by default? how do you get them into a more "contemporary" normal/bump map format?

IIRC, monochrome bumps are converted by Tool into normal maps if the tag is setup properly.

Really? I know that there's the monochrome format and "heightmap" bitmap type in the tag, each of which seem to deal with textures that deal with shader-related "depth," but I'm pretty sure these are xbox only formats and are deprecated on PC versions.

Back in the old day everyone would make their heightmaps in tool, not PS. Times have changed. I dont see any reason why anyone would do it in tool now.
