I plan to import some 3d models to the game for some Star Citizen themed halo gameplay, are there limitations as to what can be used as a 3d asset? Will blender models or similar software models work?

You need to import any mesh/geometry in 3ds Max, then use a script to export the mesh to a format that Halo can understand and then compile it for Halo
